Did you know that Knott’s Berry Farm used to be a working berry farm? It’s true. In 1920 Walter and Cordelia Knott moved to Buena Park, California to farm 20 acres of rented land to grow and harvest boysenberries. (Boysenberry is a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry named after its originator, Rudolph Boysen). Hwy-39 was the main route from Los Angeles to the Southern beach cities and Buena Park was the midway stop. “It was a family farm that turned into a Ghost Town that turned into a theme park and they were there to watch over all of it.” – Eric Lynxwiler, Historian and Co-author of “Knott’s Preserved”. This year, in honor of the famous berry, Ghost Town’s Town Hall will feature a 10-minute historical film about how Walter and Cordelia Knott settled here in Buena Park and helped the world discover the amazing boysenberry.
As mentioned, there are over 70 boysenberry varieties available this year which includes boysenberry pizza, boysenberry ravioli, boysenberry Indian fry bread, corn on the cob with boysenberry butter and mayo, deep fried alligator bites with boysenberry aioli, boysenberry hot wings, boysenberry BBQ meatballs, boysenberry corndog, chocolate covered boysenberry cheesecake on a stick, fun buns, boysenberry short ribs with jasmine rice, boysenberry apricot pulled pork, boysenberry crepes with Nutella, boysenberry flautas, and much, much, more! A Tasting Card will be available for purchase or you can buy the items individually.
The Boysenberry Festival is celebrated inside Knott’s Berry Farm and is included with park admission, however, tasting experiences will have an additional fee. Knott’s will have extended hours (10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) from April 1-23, 2017. Knott’s Berry Farm is located at 8039 Beach Blvd. in Buena Park, California.
