Anaheim Convention Center Grand Plaza Dedication and Community Event

The Anaheim Convention Center Grand Plaza, a 100,000 square foot outdoor multi-use area designed for outdoor enjoyment and meeting space, will officially open on Saturday, Jan. 12, and the community is invited to attend the festivities. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. to be followed by a free concert by the Orange County Symphony, Anaheim’s resident symphony orchestra.

Located off Convention Way at Harbor Blvd., the Grand Plaza will create a pedestrian esplanade that will span from the entrance to the Anaheim Convention Center and flow between the Hilton Anaheim and the Anaheim Marriott hotels. The Grand Plaza will provide a uniquely Southern California outdoor environment that can be utilized year-round for a wide variety of events.

The pedestrian plaza includes 151 palm trees (more than half of the palm trees in the new design were re-purposed from the existing landscape), 60 orange trees reminiscent of Anaheim and Orange County’s citrus industry, a river of lights that will run through the middle of the plaza, water features symbolizing the mountains and ocean, a 48-foot lighted entry monument, and more than 80,000 square feet of colored concrete and pavers. Key elements to the Grand Plaza are its eco-friendly features: The lighting utilizes LED technology, adding to the energy efficiency and longevity of each fixture, and plants chosen for the design are drought tolerant.

The Grand Plaza is the sixth major construction project added to the Anaheim Convention Center. The LEED-certified Anaheim Convention, the largest convention center on the west coast, opened in 1967 and sits in the heart of the Anaheim Resort District. The Anaheim Convention Center remains a popular meeting space choice for guests both locally and from around the world, and hosts major conventions and events such as the NAMM Show, Natural Products Expo, Disney’s D23, the Orange County Auto Show and the DirecTV Classic, hosted by ESPN.

Complimentary parking for the Grand Plaza event will be available at the Anaheim Convention Center’s Car Park 1 (entrance on Katella Ave.) between the hours of 3:30 – 8:00 p.m. For more information about the Grand Plaza and to RSVP, please click here.

Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau Announces Grand Plaza Groundbreaking, Debuts Virtual Site

The Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau (AOCVCB) and the City of Anaheim hosted a ceremony earlier today to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Anaheim Convention Center’s Grand Plaza.

The Grand Plaza will be a 100,000-square-foot outdoor and special event space conveniently located outside of the convention centerʼs front entrance off of Convention Way. The Grand Plaza will seamlessly create a pedestrian esplanade that will span from the entrance to the Anaheim Convention Center and flow between the Hilton Anaheim and the Anaheim Marriott hotels.

This new, multi-use space will create a uniquely Southern California outdoor environment that can be utilized year-round for a wide variety of events. The development of the Grand Plaza is slated to be complete by the end of the 2012.

In an effort to provide event planners with an inside look at the expansion, the AOCVCB recently debuted a new microsite showcasing the Grand Plaza and all the possibilities this space offers. A state-of-the-art, computer-generated preview unveils the distinctive features of this vibrant pedestrian plaza, including the lush landscaping, expansive walkways, innovative hardscape designs and dramatic water features and fountains.

“The Grand Plaza provides a new avenue for our clients to use their imagination and create something spectacular for their attendees,” noted Charles Ahlers, president of the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau. “Orange Countyʼs excellent year-round sunny weather is the perfect backdrop for this space. Here groups can dine al fresco, listen to concerts, or attend receptions and exhibitions. The Grand Plaza will enhance our open, campus-like space surrounding the Anaheim Convention Center and the walkability to the adjacent hotels. It will provide attendees with a spectacular outdoor meeting and gathering environment like no other.”

In addition, the space will provide visitors with a stronger focal point, grand entrance, landscaping and water features designed to reflect and pay homage to Anaheimʼs history and its unique Southern California environment. The area will also feature a special Transit Plaza for group travel flow.

“The Grand Plaza is designed to create a new sense of arrival for guests visiting our resort area, as well as provide us with the flexibility to utilize this attractive outdoor space in a number of ways to accommodate the needs of our clients and local citizens,” said Tom Morton, Convention Center, Sports and Entertainment executive director.
